7+ makeup tips for mature skin

For many of you, makeup is a tool you've been using to enhance your beauty since those teenage years. Much of what you learned in the beginning years was simple: like how to apply eyeliner without poking yourself in the eye, or how much blush is too much. As we get older, our face and skin change, so the tips and tricks that worked before won't necessarily work now.
That's okay. Just because a person gets older doesn't mean they can't still feel and look their best with or without makeup on. When it comes to working with mature skin, the most important rule is to make sure the skin is properly moisturized. With hydrated skin, everything will look better, but these tips will certainly help in other ways.

Stick to a neutral lip color
Specifically, aim for nude tones and muted shades of pink and coral. They replicate the natural hue of the lips but also make thinned, mature lips appear fuller. Plus, neutral shades don't draw as much attention to fine lines or other sides of aging that appear near the mouth. Look for tones that are one to two shades darker than your lip color.

Stipple on foundation
No matter what applicator you're using, you should always stipple on foundation and concealer as opposed to swirling or painting it on. Stippling is an easy way to build coverage, depending on how light or full you want it, but it also helps set the foundation on top of any wrinkles. Lightly stippling on concealer has the same effect by setting it into any saggy skin and hiding veins and dark circles. Get the tutorial here.
Avoid using a heavy foundation
Heavy foundation can weigh down the skin, the very opposite of what mature skin needs. Skin becomes drier with age, so be sure to use a hydrating foundation. Stipple with a light hand and set with a fine powder so your makeup doesn't appear cakey or too thick. You can view the tutorial here.
Stick to matte eyeshadow colors
Eyeshadow is one area of your makeup routine that allows you to play around a bit. Whether you're going with a bold color or something more subdued, make sure you stick with matte shadows. Anything with shimmer or glitter only draws attention to fine lines and wrinkles. Don't forget the eyeshadow primer—it'll keep your shadow from creasing and help it last longer. Find out more here.
Mix moisturizer with foundation for a more sheer look
Sometimes you may not want the full coverage that foundation offers. You can get a lighter and more sheer effect by mixing in your favorite facial moisturizer. It'll give your face a hydrated and refreshed look, perfect for any time of the day. Check out the tutorial here.
Use cream blush instead of powder
The most important aspect for applying makeup to mature skin is hydration. That even applies to certain steps in your makeup routine, like blush. A cream blush provides more moisture to the cheeks and doesn't catch on skin creases and wrinkles, which is a big positive. Watch the tutorial here.
Fill in brows lightly
Harsh, dark brows aren't really the best look for anyone, so try building up color when filling them in to get the most natural-looking results. Making sure your brows are evenly brushed to start will ensure you know where more or less color is needed. Use both brow gel and pencil to build up color where it's needed, but be sure to blend your brows out to create a softer, more natural look. Get the tutorial here.
