Create volume and texture with a crimping iron

If you love the look of beachy waves, but hate the way sea salt spray makes your hair feel, then it’s time to reach for a tool made popular in the '80s. The crimping iron made waves, quite literally, in the 1980s and gave straight-haired beauties the texture they’d dreamed about.
Today’s crimping irons are more refined, and many of them provide the true fluffy texture that people hoped to achieve by braiding their hair when wet and sleeping on it overnight. Gone are the tight crimp marks associated with '80s pop singers. This new and improved tool will give you soft, flowing curls without the characteristic crunch.

Instructions
1. Brush your hair with a hair brush to make sure the surface is completely smooth. Tip: Never apply a hot tool to your hair without ensuring the hair is tangle-free.
2. Section your hair horizontally from ear to ear with your fingers. Secure the top section with a hair elastic. This will make it easier to crimp all the hair.
3. Brush the lower section of hair once more, then crimp 1–2 inch sections, starting near the roots. Hold the crimper in place for a few seconds, then move it downward, and repeat the process until you’ve reached the ends.
4. Repeat step three with additional sections of hair until the entire lower section is complete.
5. Remove the elastic, and crimp all of the upper hair as well.
6. If you have shorter hair near your forehead, sweep it off to one side, and pin it in place with a bobby pin.
7. Spray your hair with hair spray, then separate the waves with your fingers to create a soft, fluffy look.
