7 tips for achieving a soft and subtle makeup look

Have you ever wondered how models and actresses get that soft, romantic look even in the dead of winter? The answer may surprise you because there's generally more involved than just makeup. We can all learn from them, though, especially with spring right around the corner.
When the weather starts to change, and spring weather brings flowers and greenery back to the landscape, we often take a cue from its design and go for more muted, subtle looks. To achieve a truly soft makeup look, check out these helpful tips.

1. Slough off the harsh edges (h/t Amy-Rose Walker)
Winter can leave your skin dry and dull, but the right facial mask can hydrate, detoxify, and even brighten your skin. Clay masks, like the one Amy-Rose uses in her video, are great for calming redness, soothing irritation, and purifying your pores. Tip: This is essential for a smooth makeup application.
2. Line your eyes with something other than black
Black may be classic, but softer shades like grey, brown, and even violet can define your eyes without looking harsh. Don't have anything but black liner? Opt for eye shadow instead.

3. Stick with muted eye shadow
You don't have to use neutral colors, but stay away from chunky glitters. A satin in soft rose or ivory makes a great choice. Get the full tutorial here. Get the full tutorial here.

4. Leave the mega-falsies in the drawer
A glamorous look always includes a fluttering fringe...just pick a pair of lashes that are wispy for a more subtle look.
5. Tone down the highlighter
If you have a trillion highlighters in your drawer (and who doesn't?), pick one with a natural finish. Liquid and cream highlighter works best when aiming for a soft glow.
6. Create that barely blushing glow
Blush is never optional, but a light hand goes a long way. Tip: Use a fluffy brush with some give to it, and your color won't go on patchy.

7. Match your lip liner and lipstick
To keep your lips subtle, line your lip and then fill it in with the same color. You can layer liner and lipstick for a longer lasting effect as well.
