6 tips to achieve a perfect lip application every time

When it comes to makeup, most of us have more lippies than we have shoes. This one staple gives more bang for the buck and can even pull double duty as blush when needed. But getting the perfect look often entails more than just swiping on a slick of color.
Whether you're looking to create long lasting color or the perfect matte finish, preparation makes a difference. Don't worry, though. It's not labor intensive, and the end result will make you a believer in no time.

1. Exfoliate frequently
You already know that using a body scrub keeps your skin smooth and flake free. Lip scrubs do the same thing. You can buy one pre-made or even make your own. Just remember to scrub gently while your lips are wet.

2. Apply a hydrating lip treatment
There's a reason why most makeup artists recommend doing your lips last. If you apply a moisturizing lip conditioner before starting your makeup routine, it will hydrate your lips and leave them ready for color.
3. Consider neutralizing your natural color
If you want to use a light lipstick but have naturally dark lips, apply a thin layer of base makeup to your lips to minimize the amount of color that shows through.
4. Layer with lip liner (h/t Chrisspy)
Applying lip liner can be a challenge, but if you notice your lip color wearing off quickly, you can combat that by applying liner onto your lips (not just around the edges). Lip liner tends to last longer than lipstick.
5. Plan on layering your color
To achieve a longer lasting lip look, apply a layer of lipstick, blot, and then apply a second coat. Try adding powder between layers, but you can do that step last as mentioned in the next tip).

6. Set with powder
This one may be new to you, but it's been around for decades. Once you've achieved your finished look, hold a tissue against your lips (don't press), and then lightly dab powder against it. Some powder will permeate the tissue and help set your lipstick without making it look dry or chalky.
And you're good to go! What do you do to ensure your gorgeous lips look lush all day?
