If you have dry skin, here are 7 makeup tips that you should follow

At some point, we all experience dry skin. If you live in a harsh winter climate or use Retin A (tretinoin) for anti-aging or acne control, flakes are a common occurrence. You may be tempted to grab that abrasive scrub and go to town on your face, but there are far better ways to deal with flaky skin.
Before you apply any makeup, keep this cardinal rule in mind: be gentle and patient. You need to show your skin some extra love before getting made up, and everything from your moisturizer to your setting powder plays a role in the final result.

1. Use a soft exfoliating cloth when washing
Dry flaky skin can quickly turn into aggravated skin if you use a cloth that's too abrasive. Invest in either a soft facial cloth or one made of muslin, then wet it and work in small gentle circles to remove dead skin.

2. Learn to love facial oils
If you were raised to think that adding oil to your face will cause a breakout, then take a trip to your local beauty counter to learn about the latest facial oils. These sink in like a dream and heal your skin at a deeper level.

3. Moisturize accordingly
As lovely as a rich cream sounds, it may still be too heavy for your daytime makeup. It can also pill up, making your flakes more obvious. Whatever you choose, be sure to pat it in gently, so you don't make your skin even more angry.
4. Prime to perfection
Every makeup professional will tell you that primer works to create an even texture. Just be sure to smooth it on gently.
5. Pick a cream or liquid foundation formula
As much as I love powder or mineral foundation, it doesn't play well with dry skin. Choosing a cream or liquid base will give you a better result that doesn't feel drying or dehydrating.
6. Choose the right applicator
Buffing foundation into the skin does yield airbrushed results. But if you already have flakes, you risk lifting up the edges with every swipe. A damp beautyblender works best here. Just pat and press (don't rub).

7. Set with hydrating powder
The thought of putting dry powder on dry skin sounds appalling, but it doesn't have to be. You can either apply it with a damp sponge or add a hydrating powder to your routine.
