If you're not priming before foundation, you should be. Here are 6 things you need to know

Anyone who has known me for more than five minutes knows that I'm obsessed with primer. My father built custom cars when I was a kid, and primer was the key to getting a quality paint job. Now, I know you don't paint your face, but priming your skin is worth the extra step.
Think of primer as both a form of protection, which keeps your makeup from breaking down, as well as a surface modifier, which allows your foundation to go on (and stay on) flawlessly. This is one unseen product that will change how everything else works.

1. Primer fills in gaps
To get that poreless look, you need a good primer. It adheres to your skin and often contains dimethicone (a silicone) which gives your skin a bit of slip, so your makeup will glide on beautifully.
2. Primer prevents oxidation
If your foundation turns orange-y, you can prevent that from happening by applying primer. The primer prevents the foundation from oxidizing and changing color during the day.
3. Primer can control oil
If your T-zone gets oily during the day, a mattifying primer can solve the problem. These often contain magnesium aluminum silicate or kaolin clay, which keeps makeup from "breaking" around the oily areas.
4. Primer can correct undertones and discoloration
Every now and then, you need to conceal redness or amp up a sallow complexion. Enter color correcting primers. Try a green tinted primer to cancel out redness or purple primer to counter yellow tones.
5. Fake a radiant complexion with primer
We can't all have that sunkissed glow, especially in winter. The primer game has changed over the years, and there are now several luminizing primers to choose from that fake that radiance without looking sparkly.
6. Primer blurs imperfections
Even if you don't wear foundation, a good blurring primer can make pores less visible and give your skin an even tone. Since many of them contain skin-loving ingredients, you can think of them as blurring serums that make your skin look radiant.
