7 tips for applying blush that every woman should know

We all love the healthy glow that blush gives our complexion, but this is still one of the trickiest makeup products to apply correctly. Logic tells us to make the whole cheek rosy, but we need a bit more advice to avoid looking cartoonish.
When it comes to that rosy glow, technique and tools make all the difference. And picking the right shade is as important as where you place that pop of color. These seven tips will have you blushing like a pro in no time.

1. Know your face shape
Here's where being unique makes makeup problematic. We all have different face shapes, so properly placing blush depends on your specific bone structure. Once you know what shape your face is, you can confidently use blush to bring out your inner glow.

2. Location is everything
Applying your blush in the wrong location can make you look older. Locate the top of your cheekbone as well as the cutoff point (about two fingers' distance from the side of the nose) to make sure your blush is high enough.
3. Pick the appropriate shade for your skin tone
Some colors look good on nearly everyone, especially peach, but the best blush choices complement your skin tone instead of working against it. If you have warm (yellow) undertones, stick with hues in the warm family to avoid looking harsh or unnatural.

4. Choose the right tool
Choosing the proper brush makes all the difference. Pick one that is too large, and you'll end up looking like you have a fever. A good blush brush should have a dome shape and be soft enough to swirl product and diffuse it without streaking.

5. Remove excess cream blush by blotting
If you've been a little heavy-handed and need to remove some pigment, use an oil blotting paper to absorb the excess. Tip: You can also hold a tissue against your cheek and blot it with a beautyblender.

6. Layer powder over cream blush
For long lasting color that doesn't disappear by mid-day, apply cream blush initially, then dust a light layer of powder blush over it.
7. Use pale pink blush as highlighter
Sometimes a shade looks lovely in the store but just doesn't pop enough on the cheeks. Don't throw out those underpigmented shades. Use them on the top of the cheekbone as a highlighter instead.
