5 things you should do before putting on your lip liner

A lot of us skip lip liner because applying it requires a steady hand and a multi-step approach that just can't happen on busy days. But when we really think about it, taking the time to properly prep and line the lips always results in a prettier pout that lasts all day.
If you're prone to lining your lips immediately after you've finished the rest of your face, you might be doing them a disservice. This five-step approach not only makes your lips look healthy and fresh, but your liner will work more effectively at preventing bleeding or feathering during the day.

1. Gently exfoliate
Depending on your preference, you can use a store-bought or DIY lip scrub, a wet washcloth, or a toothbrush. In case of the last two, make sure you apply a little petroleum jelly to keep your lips moist while you gently sweep away the flakes.

2. Moisturize and be patient
Lip balm is great at sealing in moisture after the fact, but you need to prep your lips with something that will sink in deeply first. Apply your lip treatment or clear lip gloss and then let it sink in for at least 10 minutes. If you need to rush the process, simply blot your lips with a facial blotting paper.

3. Neutralize or conceal the lip line
Concealing your natural lip line works wonders when you intend to replace it with a new, fuller version. You can use regular concealer or a lip primer, whichever you have on hand.

4. Sharpen your liner
To get the sharpest most defined line, you need to start with a sharp point. If your pencil is too dull, the line will be wider than you probably like.

5. Warm product on your hand
Lip pencils (like eye pencils) can drag and make application problematic. You'll get a more fluid application if you warm the tip against the skin on the back of your hand for a moment before beginning.
