If you're not prepping before you do your makeup, you're doing it wrong. Here are 5 things you should know

A great makeup look always begins with a great skin care routine. No matter how fabulous your products are, your face is still an unprepped canvas and needs a little TLC before you begin your makeup.
Prepping for makeup takes very little time, and the payoff is proof that the two go hand in hand. While you can certainly add a few more steps to your preparation routine, these five will always give you the best start to a flawless face.

1. Cleanse
Depending on your skin's needs, you may or may not need to wash your face in the morning. If you do, choose a low pH cleanser that doesn't strip your skin of essential moisture. If you don't need to wash, though, quickly sweep micellar water over your face to remove any leftover debris or oil from the night before.
2. Eye cream or serum
A lot of people skip this step believing that dedicated eye creams are simply moisturizers in tiny tubes with high price tags. In reality, eye creams contain vastly different ingredients because your under eye area is sensitive and has distinct needs. Take a moment to lightly pat your eye cream in using your ring finger, which has the lightest pressure. This will help your concealer apply smoothly.
3. Neck and decollete
Unless you're wearing a turtleneck, you need to moisturize these areas, too. Always apply your products in an upward motion. After all, gravity's already making wrinkles. Why add to them?
4. Moisturize
Be it mist, lotion, or cream, your skin needs moisture. It's one step makeup artists never skip because it helps blur fine lines and keeps your skin from absorbing excess product.

5. Prime
As the last step in your prep routine, be sure to apply a primer to your face, eye lids, and even your lips (using different products, of course). Primer prevents foundation from oxidizing while also creating a smoother surface overall. Ultimately, your primer will also help your makeup last longer.
